Relaxing & eating day Mmmm, big buffet breakfast. That was a tasty mix of local fruits, local pastry types, local yogurt and some tasty muesli. I'm already thinking about eating it tomorrow morning.
We chill for a while, watching boats in the rain from our balcony. Then meet up with K and drive over to her house to hang out with her kids for a little bit. Chill there and give the little ones some presents before we head to the Canal to see the nearby Locks.
You think about the Panama Canal in abstract easily, but witnessing it firsthand is pretty astounding. Those ships are friggin' huge! The whole thing operates pretty swiftly considering the mass of water and vessel being moved around. We also walked through the nifty accompanying museum, watched a short video, and learned about planned expansion to the Locks and Canal in the next decade. Impressive and economically vital it seems.
On the way back to the house we stopped at a great fruit stand slash chinese grocer that included a ton of fresh fruit (whole and cut) where we stocked up heavily. Back at the house we snack a bit and prepare for a BBQ dinner. K's husband J gets home and our party of 10 is ready to get down to eating. Dinner is awesome, and then we dig into a ton of ice cream varieties for dessert, including passion fruit, pineapple, coconut milk, tamarind and more. Yum! | | 8:55 am |
Day 2: Good morning Comfy hotel beds, cute little balcony, view of the bay covered in fog as we wake. We all slept nicely, and now it's time to sample the breakfast buffet. Love that hotel-wide wireless (but no plundr yet). Looking forward to seeing the rest of K's family today, and who knows what else. Traveling without a serious game plan can be fun. | | 12:42 am |
Panama Day 1: Departure is smooth, flight includes rude stewardesses who don't give us water, but one nice steward redeems the mood. Arrival greeted by cousin K, and then a winding drive to our hotel. Yay for free wireless. Already learned about the crazy painted and wildly decorated city buses that are privately owned and run. Tomorrow: explore the food!
Coolest thing about the Panama City airport: butt hammocks! Long lines of seats colored the sickly green-yellow-gray of infant poop, suspended on metal frames that make them swing ever so slightly from side to side when you sit in them. Much comfier than they look, and kinda neat in shape if not in color.
We also began using our precious chocolate supplies while waiting for the rental car, since apparently you cannot get good chocolate in Panama. We stocked up, for K's sake. | | Sunday, July 8th, 2007 | | 8:37 am |
